  5. The lens must have a wettable surface 
  6. when placed on the eye if it is to be 
  7. comfortable.  Often diagnostic lenses 
  8. are stored dry so using a wetting 
  9. (conditioning) solution on the lens 
  10. prior to placement is important.  
  11. Place a drop of the solution on the 
  12. lens and rub the surface.  If you are 
  13. going to view the fluorescein pattern 
  14. after placing the lens on the eye, 
  15. rinse the majority of the wetting 
  16. solution off with saline.  If you do 
  17. not, the viscous solution with cause the fluorescein to coat the lens surface making it difficult to evaluate the fluorescein under the lens.
